Planning

Corridor assessments and route selection

Corridors are planning spaces for infrastructure projects (e.g. road, rail, hydroelectric power plants) within the dimensions of which route options can be developed. The most important steps in a corridor assessment are:

  • Identifying a corridor in which the planned infrastructure in principle should or can run
  • Describing the current conditions within the corridor
  • Identifying specific problems
  • Developing and assessing alternative routes
  • Selecting preferred route options and investigating these in depth
  • Analysing, enhancing and assessing the preferred route options in depth
  • Selecting the best alternative for further analyses and planning phases

Corridor assessments involve multidisciplinary collaboration. 3G covers the geological, hydrogeological and geotechnical aspects and, in the planning steps described above, supplies all the soil-relevant information and planning criteria for the other specialist fields.
