Investigation and evaluation of the condition from a rehabilitation needed railway tunnel
The Karawankentunnel is about 111 years old and an important railway link between Austria and Slovenia. The tunnel is also part of the Trans-European Network (TEN-T-Network).
The tunnel with two rail tracks has a length of about 7,974 m, with 3,601 m on Slovenian territory (approx. 45%) and 4,373 m on Austrian territory (approx. 55%). Rosenbach is the last railway station in Austria and Jesenice is the first one in Slovenia.
The gauge of the existing railway tunnel is inadequate concerning modern standards of the European railway network. Furthermore standards of safety requirements and worker protection legislation are not met anymore. Also structural conditions of the tunnel are deficient in parts (for instance drainage system, stone masonry tunnel lining).
